What’s Holding You Back? [Reblog]

Every day when I check Facebook or Twitter I see heaps of people saying they’d love to be writers, but just don’t know how to start.

This is called writing…

Well, what exactly is holding you back? You don’t really need to know how to “start” writing… if you want to be a writer, it’s pretty much as simple as taking the ideas in your head and turning them into words. When it comes down to it, the point of writing is to say something. All you have to do is figure out what you want to say, and then you’re a writer. Just relax and try to let your words flow naturally onto the page. They don’t need to be perfect or even articulate — hell, you don’t even have to “start” at the beginning!

Writing is not something that follows a specific process. It’s an art-form (God, does that sound pretentious to say) and the very best writing comes from within — not from Creative Writing for Dummies or other self help books. Everybody approaches writing in a different way, and everyone has a different style. Technical skill is important, sure (or not) but it’s nothing without that epic story you have inside you, just bursting to be told.
